Collection Unit "A"
Antique coins collection (Greek, Celtic, Roman, and Byzantine coins)
The coins of Celtic and other protohistoric peoples who used to
live in the Kárpát basin make up a unit of nearly 6000 coins. Most
of these are Celtic coins but a significant part of it consists
of Hungarian coins made after Byzantine stamps. A special unit of
the coins collection is the Greek collection of 10000 coins. The
most important pieces of the collection are the coins that came
to Hungary through trade relations and were found later. However,
with the help of donations and systematic expansion now every significant
group of Greek numismatics is represented by a serie.
The smaller part of the Roman collection counting nearly 70000
coins is from the period of the republic, while the larger part
is made up of coins from the imperial period. The most valuable
part of the collection is the finding of Szikáncs consisting of
1439 golden soldiuses.
