Central Library

The Central Library was founded in 1950. The base of the collection consisted specialized textbooks concerning archaeological and historical issues. The collection was broadened by adding documents related to protection of work of arts in 1987, and in 1989, documents from libraries of contemporary history.

The library is on of the biggest archaeological specialized libraries in Middle Europe, and its up-to-date state is maintained by intensive exchange of publications. The collection including more than 250 000 pieces of documents is made up of regular publications on archaeology, Medieval and contemporary history, sparse documents published after 1840, specialized textbooks concerning protection of work of arts and instauration as well as 100 CD and DVD ROMs.

The aim of the collection is to support the different units in the Museum by archaeological historical documents and publications, to provide paper or electronic sources to the exhibitions.

In 2004, building of an electronic database began. At present, the data processing of the current publications are in progress. The earlier documents can be searched by the traditional method, that is, by author, by title as well as by subject headings.

The database can be found on http://certus.oszk.hu/librivision_eng.html . (As the building of the database is in progress, it does not include the whole collection.)
The library is a public research library and being a special one, periodicals, handbooks, e-document are not, printed monographs are allowed to be borrowed for limited period.

The following publications are subject to exchange of publications:

• The papers of the museum's research workers, catalogues of the exhibitions,
• FOLIA ARCHHAEOLOGICS and FOLIA HISTORICA annuals,
• COMMUNICATIONES ARCHAEOLOGICAE HUNGARIAE periodicals,
• BIBLIOTHECA HUMANITATIS HISTORICA, INVENTARIA PRAEHISTORICA HUNGARIAE, as part of the Régészeti Füzetek (Archaaeological Papers), CATALOGI MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARIAE, MONUMENTA AVARORUM ARCHAEOLOGICA periodicals, etc.
