Museum Festival
With the expressed aim to create tradition, the Hungarian National
Museum called into being Museums' Majális in 1996 thus uniting the
world of Hungarian museums. Organically connected to International
Museum Day (18th May), which has been organised annually for almost
three decades by ICOM (International Council of Museums), this certain
May weekend is intended to draw attention to the world of museums
as well as to the measures of pressing necessity in favour of protecting
works of art and cultural heritage. Being a remarkable event among
the wide range of programs in the capital, the festival draws more
and more visitors year after year.
Museums' Main Street, besides making room for museum and local
historical collections, will provide opportunity for some prominent
representatives of domestic cultural heritage and tourism to make
themselves known. Unusual ingenuity and more colourful outlook coupled
with their uniquely furnished tents will allure guests to "real"
exhibitions, to getting acquainted with their works and home.
Crafts' Street is providing another popular scene of the commotion
of the festival where folk artists and craftsmen whilst selling
their goods will introduce the inquirers into the tricks of the
trade.
Most Programs are going to take place on the Grand Stage situated
in the centre. The weekend will offer colourful performances of
such a high quality that will render the whole program alluring
to every age-group and to Hungarian and foreign visitors alike,
as well as ensure amusement and recreation all day long.
Children's stage will make the participants of museum pilgrimage
stop for a while on both days. It is going to offer a bit of a restful
entertainment for the whole family; children may enjoy themselves
listening to tales evoking bygone ages and taking part in musical
games, whilst adults may take pleasure in concerts recalling various
historic ages.
The Hungarian National Museum's Public Relations Department is
entrusted with organising, arranging for and carrying out the two-day
long program. In doing so, it relies on the expertise and ten years
of experience of its PR staff, who perform their duty in close co-operation
with the museum's Finance and other Departments concerned as well
as the museums to be present.
